Check curtain width before counting panels

Translate track width, heading fullness and per-panel measurements into a curtain purchase count, with a separate check for stack-back and clear opening.

Find out what the quoted width means

Curtain listings can describe flat fabric width, finished gathered width or the width of one panel in a pair. Confusing those conventions can leave a window barely covered or create a bulky stack that cannot open properly. Begin with the seller's exact definition for the product and heading you intend to buy.

Measure the installed pole or track using the maker's instructions. If hardware is not yet selected, treat the curtain order as pending. Window-glass width is useful room information, but it is not automatically the coverage width the maker needs.

Keep ready-made and made-to-measure methods separate. A maker may ask for finished track coverage and add fullness itself; a ready-made purchase may require you to compare flat panel width. Do not multiply a measurement twice because two guides use different conventions.

Establish the intended open and closed positions

Record the window opening, available wall on both sides and obstacles such as cupboards or adjacent doors. Decide how much of the opening should remain visible when the curtains are open. The fabric stack occupies real space and depends on heading, material and hardware.

IKEA's measuring guide distinguishes fabric curtains from panel curtains and prompts attention to nearby features. Its suggested extensions are guidance within that system, not a universal stack-back guarantee for every curtain. Ask the maker about the actual fabric and heading.

Check the hardware's support and load requirements through its instructions. A longer rail and heavier lining can change the installation needs. Do not extend a pole beyond a product's permitted arrangement merely to create more parking space for fabric.

Choose fullness through the heading specification

Ask the seller how much fabric or which ready-made width is recommended for the chosen heading and coverage. Pencil pleat, eyelet, wave and fixed pleat products may use different conventions. Record the recommendation with the product reference.

Compare a sample or display where useful, but do not infer the required fabric quantity from an image without dimensions. A photograph may show a curtain partly open, compressed or styled for display. The installed closed condition is the important width check.

Keep appearance preferences distinct from coverage. A less full curtain may cover the opening but look different from the intended folds. A fuller curtain may require more stack-back. Select an arrangement that works in both states, and ask the maker to resolve uncertainty before a custom order.

Calculate a ready-made panel count

This illustrative calculation assumes a 240 cm track, a seller-approved flat-width fullness factor of 2 and panels each 140 cm wide before gathering. The target flat fabric width is 240 × 2 = 480 cm. Three panels provide 420 cm, which is 60 cm short; four provide 560 cm.

Four panels give an actual flat-width ratio of 560 ÷ 240, or about 2.33. That may or may not suit the heading and fabric, so confirm with the seller. If the product comes in pairs, four panels require two pairs, not four packages.

The example excludes special overlap, returns, joining and heading constraints. It is not a made-to-measure order formula. If a maker requests only the finished track width, send the requested measurement and let its specified method determine the fabric.

Check package contents and symmetry

Read whether the package contains one panel, a pair or another configuration, and whether the stated dimensions apply to each panel. Do not rely on the main product image showing two curtains. Keep a screenshot or order copy of the relevant measurement statement.

For a centre-opening arrangement, confirm how the panels divide across the track and whether their headings can be joined or positioned as intended. An odd panel count can create an asymmetric layout that the household did not mean to choose.

Check colour and batch arrangements where multiple packages are needed. John Lewis's guide discusses batch consistency and pattern matching within particular made-to-measure services. Do not assume that any retailer will guarantee matching across separately ordered ready-made packs; ask about the actual product.

Assess the open stack separately

Ask for a stack-back estimate or demonstration using the actual heading and fabric. Record the distance available beside the opening and any handle, radiator or furniture conflict. A correct total width can still leave too much glass covered when open.

VISUAL CHECK / 06Observe gathered fabric separately from closed coverage

The tied curtains show fabric gathering within the glazed opening, rather than a measured stack drawn fully to one side. For a width decision, inspect the actual heading and fabric gathered in the intended open position, including lining and nearby controls. Do not transfer a stack allowance from this different arrangement or infer a panel width from the photograph.

Where an existing curtain has a similar construction, observe it as a comparison without claiming equivalence. A heavier lining or different heading may occupy more space. State which features differ and keep the comparison provisional.

Consider a different opening arrangement, hardware position or curtain construction if the stack cannot be accommodated. Do not simply buy fewer panels unless the closed coverage and heading requirements still work. Width and stack-back are linked decisions that need a jointly workable answer.

Keep length and installation as separate gates

Once panel width is resolved, measure the drop under the selected heading convention. A curtain can have the correct width while hanging at the wrong height. Do not use a width calculation as approval of the entire order.

Confirm installation permission, suitable fixings and hardware capacity before ordering heavy textiles. The reviewed VIDGA guide describes components within that product system; it should not be treated as instructions for an unrelated pole or wall type.

Record the final order as hardware, heading, coverage, panel count, package count and drop. Ask the supplier to review any uncertain convention. A concise written specification is easier to correct than a returned custom curtain made from an ambiguous phone description.

Check the installed open and closed states

After installation under the relevant instructions, close the curtains fully and inspect coverage, meeting edges and movement. Open them to the intended positions and check the remaining clear opening. Record any mismatch before altering or shortening the product.

Do not force gliders or overload the hardware to obtain the intended folds. Ask the supplier about a movement or compatibility problem. Keep packaging and order details until the relevant questions are resolved under the seller's process.

The width decision is complete when the curtains cover as intended, open into available space and match the recorded panel convention. The number of packages is merely the purchasing result of those checks.

Clarify overlaps and returns with the maker

Ask whether the chosen hardware uses a centre overlap, return to the wall or another detail that affects coverage. Keep these terms tied to the maker's drawing. Do not add a generic extra width when the service has already incorporated it in its requested measurement.

For a track with separate channels or overlapping arms, identify which measurement the maker wants and how the curtains meet. A straight tape reading across the window may omit part of the operating arrangement. Send a clear photograph and the hardware reference where the convention is uncertain.

Check whether end brackets or decorative finials are included in a pole's advertised length. Usable curtain travel may differ from the outermost hardware width. Record the usable span separately so the panel calculation is based on the surface the curtain actually covers.

These details are especially useful when replacing curtains on existing hardware. Confirm compatibility rather than assuming every new heading can use the old hooks, rings or gliders.
